Peninsula Books Collaborative – More than a not-for-profit

Peninsula Books Collaborative – More than a not-for-profit
by Alessia Vannelli, HS Intern
When I was picked for the sole spot as an intern at Peninsula Books Collaborative, I was fairly eager to begin – yet I was unsure of what to expect. My prior knowledge of non-profits was unenlightened, but my first two weeks working with this social enterprise blessed me with much insight into not only the workings of a non-profit but also the engagement the store has with the community. Shortly after taking on this internship, I found that Peninsula Books Collaborative was not solely a traditional bookstore, but the central hub with varying activities and participation in the wider community. From clubs, activities, hosting book fairs, supporting teachers, and more, this non-profit is a fruitful part of the San Mateo County community. They offer an alternative to commercial bookstores or sellers and a more sustainable and meaningful connection. I find that not only are their offerings valuable, but it is the staff and volunteers that make it so special. Raquel, the founder, is a wonderful mentor and pillar of the running of this non-profit. I recall asking her a question I found quite trivial, “ What is a nonprofit?,” and she responded by explaining how they run and how this one specifically works within the community. Working with the team has offered me a remarkable way to learn hands-on how relationships are built and made from a business standpoint. I was positioned to work with other staff and volunteers alone, which offered pleasant conversation and another perspective on the true community aspect. In a conversation with a fellow volunteer, I was able to learn about her college experience with the specific major and school I am interested in pursuing. This offered me insight while building connection within this nonprofit’s atmosphere. Within the bookstore, it is a welcoming small business that sells new and used books and offers a free section of books for the community, along with other miscellaneous items such as journals and puzzles. Yet PBC is not just a store; it is an organization that offers a place for interactions and bonds to grow over shared interest and support for books and their importance, and is proving to be an impactful part of the peninsula community.
