Monster romance—romance featuring nonhuman love interests—is having a massive moment. These aren’t your typical brooding vampires—we’re talking about characters who challenge everything we think we know about relationships, gender, and what it means to be human.
In A Soul to Keep by Opal Reyne, monster Orpheus demands a human sacrifice every decade in exchange for protecting Reia’s village. When Reia is chosen as the offering, she expects to meet a terrifying, inhuman being. And she does. But she also discovers that Orpheus is terribly lonely and just wants companionship. Reia soon grows unexpectedly captivated by Orpheus, even while yearning for freedom. This unlikely love story offers radical lessons about consent, vulnerability, and what it means to love
across difference.
Join our Silent Book Club! Choose your own book and come read quietly alongside others at our shop. We’ll get settled and do intros, read silently for an hour, then chat for a bit (if you like). We will have some snacks and drinks, but feel free to bring your own as well.
Don’t know what to read? Come early and we can give recommendations! You can also browse our lending library, or choose a free book provided by our co-host @skylineblue.bookbox.
Since we opened in the fall, people have asked us if we will be hosting events. As an all volunteer led organization, we are relying heavily on volunteers who are interested in creating or hosting events. Thanks to these amazing volunteers and community partners, we now have some great events coming up! Head over to peninsulabooks.org/events to learn more details about any of the events or subscribe to our calendar.
We look forward to seeing you soon!
